Origin of the Term “Cap” in Soccer/Football

Back in the day, like in the 1900s, when a national team would go to another country to play in a match, the home team would give each member of the away team a brimmed hat.  Today, literal caps are not exchanged, but the term “cap” continues to represent a game played against a foreign team, in which you represented your country. While many fans of a national team have never set foot on the pitch for the national team, they refer to the number of national team matches they’ve attended as “caps.”
